First-line imaging for bone and joint abnormalities, plus real-time procedural guidance.
→Cross-sectional imaging with fine detail for complex areas including spine, pelvis and hindfoot.
→High-detail imaging of bones, joints, muscles, tendons and other soft tissues.
→Dynamic assessment of tendons, muscles and ligaments, with guided treatment where appropriate.
→Image-guided diagnostic and therapeutic procedures, including injections and biopsies.
→Imaging to investigate bone density and areas of altered bone activity.
→Joint contrast studies to help investigate selected shoulder and hip conditions.
→Expert witness reports for legal claims requiring specialist radiology opinion.
→MRI uses a powerful magnet and radio waves to create detailed images of soft tissues and bone without using X-rays. It is commonly used to investigate the shoulder, hip, knee, foot and ankle, spine, and smaller joints of the hands and feet. CT creates cross-sectional and 3D views and is particularly useful for fine bony detail in complex anatomy such as the spine, pelvis and hindfoot.
X-rays are often a first-line examination for bone and joint abnormalities. Fluoroscopy provides moving X-ray images and can be used to support accurate needle positioning for procedures.
Ultrasound uses high-frequency sound waves to produce dynamic images. It is commonly used to assess muscles, tendons and ligaments, including the rotator cuff and biceps at the shoulder, soft tissues around the hip, tendons around the knee and ankle, and muscle injuries in the upper or lower limb.
Because the examination can assess movement in real time, it can also be used to guide injections when that is clinically appropriate.
Interventional radiology uses X-ray, CT or ultrasound guidance to support procedures such as arthrograms, biopsies and therapeutic injections. The exact approach depends on the clinical question and will be discussed with the referring clinician and patient.
Isotope bone scans map changes in bone activity and may be used when a clinician needs to investigate a wider skeletal problem. A nuclear medicine team will provide any preparation and timing instructions for an individual scan.
Our consultant radiologists bring deep musculoskeletal expertise, academic experience and a practical approach to every referral.

Ask us a question →An X-ray is a non-invasive examination that can help a clinician investigate bone and joint problems, including injury after a fall or trauma. You may be asked to remove jewellery or metal items and keep still briefly while images are taken.
Please tell your referrer and the imaging team before an X-ray, CT or MRI appointment. They will consider the clinical benefit and any precautions needed for your individual situation.
Tell the imaging team about any pacemaker, implantable device, previous surgery or metal injury before your appointment. MRI suitability depends on the specific device and will be assessed through safety screening.
Depending on the clinical question, CT, ultrasound, bone scan or arthrography may be considered. Your referring clinician and radiologist will select the most appropriate examination.
A bone scan may be used to investigate bone abnormalities or areas of altered bone activity. It is a nuclear medicine examination and is different from bone densitometry.
The practice works from a network of established hospitals and imaging centres in Birmingham and the wider Midlands.
